Filtration Problems
Solutions for filter pressure, media issues, and circulation problems
High Pressure Warning
Filter pressure above 30 PSI can cause equipment damage or dangerous failures. If your pressure is 10+ PSI above starting pressure, clean or backwash immediately. Never operate with pressure above manufacturer limits.
Understanding Pool Filter Types
DE Filters
Diatomaceous Earth filters provide the finest filtration (3-5 microns), trapping the smallest particles.
- โข Best water clarity
- โข Requires DE powder
- โข Annual grid cleaning
- โข 10-15 PSI rise = clean
Sand Filters
Sand filters are low-maintenance and durable, filtering particles down to 20-40 microns.
- โข Easy backwashing
- โข Sand lasts 5-7 years
- โข Good for large pools
- โข 8-10 PSI rise = backwash
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters offer good filtration (10-15 microns) with no backwashing required.
- โข Water-saving design
- โข Easy to clean
- โข Replace every 1-2 years
- โข 8 PSI rise = clean
Most Common Filtration Issues
High Filter Pressure
Pressure gauge reading 10+ PSI above clean starting pressure.
Common Causes:
Quick Fix:
Backwash or clean filter immediately. Check for obstructions in system.
Low Filter Pressure
Pressure gauge reading significantly below normal operating range.
Common Causes:
Quick Fix:
Check pump basket, skimmer baskets, and look for air bubbles in pump.
DE Powder in Pool
White powder coming through return jets after adding DE.
Common Causes:
Quick Fix:
Stop pump immediately. Filter grids likely damaged and need inspection.
Filter Not Clearing Water
Water remains cloudy despite continuous filtration.
Common Causes:
Quick Fix:
Check filter media condition and water chemistry. May need clarifier.
All Filtration Problems
Short Filter Cycles
ModerateFilter requires cleaning much more frequently than normal.
Cloudy Water After Backwash
ModeratePool becomes cloudy immediately after backwashing sand filter.
Multiport Valve Leaking
HardWater leaking from waste line or around valve handle.
Sand in Pool
ProfessionalSand accumulating on pool floor, coming through returns.
Air in Filter System
ModerateAir bubbles in pump basket, returns blowing air bubbles.
Pressure Gauge Not Working
EasyFilter pressure gauge stuck, reading zero, or obviously incorrect.
Cartridge Filter Collapse
ModerateFilter cartridge pleats crushed or collapsed inward.
Optimal Filter Run Time
EasyDetermining how long to run pool filter for clear water.
Sand Filter Channeling
ProfessionalWater creating channels through sand, reducing filtration.
Water Bypassing Filter
HardUnfiltered water returning to pool, debris passing through.
Backwash Valve Stuck
ModerateCannot move multiport valve handle or push-pull valve stuck.
